Unit 1 - Alternatives to IWBs
Alternatives
1. Epson Brightlink - Using just a projector, Epson Brighlink allows you to turn any surface into an interactive whiteboard. Low cost and easy installation (without the need to install a board on the wall) makes this solution a more attractive one to the traditional board and projector IWB.
2. SMART LightRaise - This is the SMART Technology version of the Epson Brightlink.
3. Tablet & projector link - This solution is not a conventional IWB solution in which instead of writing on the wall/board, one writes on the tablet. There are benefits of doing this as often times the criticism of an IWB is that it is only interactive for the limited number of people who can be at the board at once. A class set of iPads will allow all students to interact with the content and also any one student to project their iPad screen onto the display. The following two videos will show you a simple (home) solution of connecting the iPad to the display using a third party app and with Apple TV. There are also enterprise solutions of fitting all classrooms in a school with Apple TV (can be very expensive) which is beyond the scope of this tutorial.
4. DIY using Wii remote - If your school doesn't have a budget for IWB you can build one using a Wii remote for a cost of about $40-60

While most of the IWBs are represented in the category of a physical board and projector, IWBs are not limited to only this category. There are many solutions available and are as effective as the physical boards.

Activity - Now that you have seen how an Interactive Whiteboard functions and reviewed some of the alternatives, take some time to consider the context in which you will be using your Interactive Whiteboard and think about the following:
1. What type of Interactive Whiteboard or Interactive Projector will you be using?
2. Identify the 'local experts' or technical support staff who you can assist you should you encounter difficulty using your IWB.
3. Before moving on to the next unit, ensure that you have your computer and IWB connected and tested the functionality.
