Here is a list of features that are common to both SMART and Promethean IWB:
- use of a pen, stylus and/or finger to control the computer desktop that is projected onto a board
- multi-touch allowing more than one user writing on the board (newer models only)
- text/shape recognition through the software's package OCR
- works just like a whiteboard but with ability to save content written, drawn or annotated on the board
- access to a resource community

A product comparison between SMART and Promethean IWB.
The following seven principles of effective interactive pedagogy have been derived from teacher's use of IWB (Murcia & Sheffield, 2010). Examples have been included for each of the principles.
Activity - Before moving on to the next sections of this page. It is time to start building a lesson to be used on your IWB. Take the time now to choose an expectation or curriculum strand that will be the foundation of the lesson. As you proceed through the next sections, think about how each feature would enhance the lesson to engage students in their participation and enrich their learning.

Engaging and Appealing Interactive Displays
Interactive Whiteboards can use imported visuals or captured as a manipulative tool for students to edit, move or annotate information at the board

Activity - Develop familiarity with the features of your IWB. Practise moving and manipulating objects on the IWB. How will you use the this feature of the IWB in your lesson? Perhaps a jigsaw or a comparison?
Accessing Online Information
Interactive Whiteboards can be used effectively to access online information by:
Examples / IWB lessons
Youtube - SMART Annotating on a website
Youtube - SMART Notebook Web browser
- embedding online resources can provide the most up-to-date information about science concept and examples
- highlighting and annotating over online resources can help with discussions with students

Activity - Determine what outside reference sites to include in the lesson. How would you use these sites in the lesson to engage the students further? Practice embedding links to these sites in your lesson.
Linking Media Files
Interactive Whiteboards can access media files through attached videos, simulations, and demonstrations which can help enrich classroom discussion and the scientific language used.
Examples / IWB lessons
Youtube - Inserting downloaded video to SMART board

Activity - Is there rich media content (i.e., video, audio) that could be included in your lesson? Determine where it would be appropriate to embed the content in your lesson.
Interactive Online Activities
The use of online interactive sites and games can help students to engage in learning
Examples / IWB lessons
SMART board express - skeleton games, Grade 4-5
Website - Topical resources
Website - Spongelab
Activity - Do you rely on any online interactive sites that would be appropriate to include at this point in the lesson? If so, create a hyperlink in your lesson to access these resources.

Increase Wait Time
Interactive Whiteboards can be used to list questions and software tools can hide and reveal questions and answers.

Activity - Now would be a good opportunity to add some questioning to your lesson. Develop a set of questions based on the content provided thus far and use the features of the IWB software to enhance the questioning and reveal of the answers.
Reviewing Learning
Interactive Whiteboard software can record lesson notes and save pages for review
Examples / IWB lessons
Youtube - How to record a lesson

Activity - Save your lesson plan so that you can review and improve on your lesson as part of your professional development. Not only will you be able to reuse your lesson, you can improve and provide the most updated content to your students.
Constructing a Series of Interactive Activities within a Lesson
Interactive Whiteboard software can be used to organize lessons that are well-structured and easily accessible.
